One of the best products for giving protection to fine sable brushes is called “Lard Oil.”
When using artist oil paints, care needs to be taken to clean brushes well. Dipping after in lard oil will guarantee the last remaining colors in the brush will not harden and ruin the brush shape.
It’s easy to wash it out before painting again.
Lard oil was once available in hardware stores and art supply shops, but is now hard to find. We have limited quantities of lard oil available.
More information and detailed directions for the use of lard oil is covered in Rosemaling In the Round, Swedish Folk Painting of Dalarna, and Norwegian Folk Art Fun.
